We work on problems where data, not model size, is the bottleneck. If that is the kind of work you want to do, here is how to reach us.
Positions
PhDPhD studentsOpen
We look for PhD students who are comfortable building systems as well as models. A strong background in databases, distributed systems, machine learning or probabilistic modelling is expected, along with the programming skill to turn an idea into a working prototype.
Admission to the PhD programme is handled by the Department of Computer Engineering. Write to the director once you have applied, or before, and say which of the lab’s research directions you want to work in and why.
MScMSc studentsOpen
MSc students in the lab usually take on one focused problem and carry it from a literature survey to an implementation and an evaluation on real data. Previous theses have become conference and journal papers.
Sharif MSc students should write with a short description of what they want to work on, a transcript, and any code they are proud of.
UndergraduateUndergraduate researchersOpen
Undergraduate researchers join an ongoing project alongside a graduate student. The commitment is a real one — roughly ten hours a week for at least two terms — and the work is expected to end in something concrete: a benchmark, a dataset, an implementation, or a section of a paper.
Strong programming ability matters more than coursework.
InternshipResearch internshipsClosed
The lab occasionally hosts short research internships for students from other universities. There is no open call at the moment; this page is updated when that changes.
How to apply
- Read a couple of the lab’s recent papers and decide which research direction interests you.
- Email Maryam Ramezani with your CV, transcript, and a short paragraph on what you want to work on and why.
- Include links to code you have written, if you have any.
We read every message. If you have not heard back within two weeks, it is fine to write again.
What we look for
- You can turn an idea into working code without being told how.
- You are curious about both sides of the lab: how models work, and how the systems around them work.
- You write clearly, and you are honest about what did not work.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to have published before? No. Most students join without a publication. We care more about what you can build and how you think about a problem.
Can I work with the lab if I am not a Sharif student? For MSc and PhD, you first need to be admitted to the Department of Computer Engineering. For short research internships, see the internship entry above.
How much time does an undergraduate project take? Roughly ten hours a week for at least two terms.
Our commitment
The lab is a place where everyone is treated with respect, whatever their background, gender or beliefs. Disagreement about ideas is welcome; disrespect towards people is not.
