Community structure is usually recovered from the links of a network, but in many real settings those links are unavailable while the information that travels over them is observed. This work detects communities from diffusion information alone, using the behaviour of cascades over the network in place of its topology.
Communities are normally read off the link structure of a network. When that structure is hidden, the cascades that travel over it still carry the signal: nodes in the same community tend to be activated together and in similar order. This paper builds community detection directly on that observation.
